REVIEW: Shadowhunters Eps 2-4 ★★★☆☆

5208aa49-4e70-4a05-be81-dc7ce901e341Let’s just save ourselves the time and do a bulk review to catch ourselves up, shall we? Yes, I gave Shadowhunters three stars. But it’s for episode two through four, so I’m really judging close to three hours of content.

So what’s happened so far? Clary found out her Dad is Valentine (oh no!), her mom lied ot her (typical teenage things), Simon was kidnapped and lit looks like he’s going to be a vampire (poor friend-zoned nerd boy), Jace is blatantly in love with Clary although he’s “never been in love,” Alec was outed as a homosexual, and Clary destroyed her one shot at getting her memories back.

I’d really like to talk characterization for these episodes. Because I think these arcs are moving and sometimes forced. Every character needs a want and a flaw for them to be three dimensional. Obviously, Clary wants to save her mother. In fact, that’s all she ever seems to say.

SHADOWHUNTERS - "Dead Man's Party" - Clary, Jace, Alec and Isabelle must hatch a rescue plan that takes them into the heart of a vampire lair in “Dead Man’s Party,” an all-new episode of “Shadowhunters,” airing Tuesday, January 26th at 9:00 – 10:00 p.m., EST/PST on Freeform, the new name for ABC Family. ABC Family is becoming Freeform on January 12, 2016. (ABC Family/John Medland) ALBERTO ROSENDE, KAITLYN LEEB“Clary, do you want to go after the demon?”

“I’ll do anything to save my mother.”

“Should we go after Magnus Bane?”

“I’ll do anything to save my mother.”

“Hey you want pizza?”

“I’ll eat anything to save my mother.”

All right, the last one isn’t actually in there, but you get my point. And Alec hates Clary, and Isabel is comfortable with her body, and Jace has never loved anyone. Except he clearly has. The way these characters are being written and portrayed makes me feel like the writers don’t have a feel for them, and neither dot he actors. But they are trying.

“But Jess! You didn’t read the books!”

Correct! And I’ve noticed these inconsistencies in Shadowhunters from episode to episode–what does that say?

shadow-hunters-ep-4-recap-ftrI mean, how can someone who doesn’t have feelings have the desire to help someone in need? How can someone’s only defining trait be that she is comfortable being a sexualized object? The most well-defined secondary character (at least so far) is Alec, as we’ve just gotten a reason as to why he’s so rude to Clary.

Now, to be honest-I’m still mixed about the series. And I’m getting the feeling (especially from my Tumblr feed) that had I read the books, I’d be very mad about this series. But as far as a TV series goes-well Shadowhunters isn’t heinous.

But I guess I’ll know whether or not I’ll keep up to date after episode five.
